Here at the Blyth Sportshall Athletics Series we actively encourage young athletes to participate in a wide variety of disciplines. The multi-event approach at a young age is vital to allow for long term development and retention within the sport. Athletes that have competed in our series have gone on to become national combined event champions.
At each of our meetings athletes will participate in 5 very different events. Points will be earned based on the distance/height/time recorded, contributing towards the points total
64m Sprint - 3 athletes at a time race against each other and the clock using 'reverser boards' to turn at each end of the sportshall. This is a fast paced and intense event!
Endurance Run - Distance depends on age group, but athletes will need to ensure they pace themselves over the course of either 5, 7 or 9 laps of the course. Using 'reverser boards' to change direction adds to the challenge so athletes must conserve their energy and perhaps deliver a sprint finish!
Chest Push - Using an appropriate weight medicine ball, athletes must perform a chest push aiming for maximum distance. Technique is important for this fundamental movement pattern, and our team are always on hand to offer help to young athletes.
Vertical Jump - The process begins by the athlete standing against the wall and reaching as high as possible with both hands to push up the measuring board. Once this has been done, athlete will perform a standing vertical jump with the aim of touching as high as they can on the board.
Standing Long Jump - A classic event - athletes perform a simple standing long jump aiming for max distance. Controlling trajectory is key for this event.
